Increasing Unit-Linked Insurance and PPLI within Life Insurance Companies

The assets of life insurance and occupational pension companies may be invested in traditional life insurance, unit-linked insurance or private placement life insurance (PPLI). In unit-linked insurance and PPLI, policyholders choose the funds, equities and other assets in which the capital is invested and therefore bear the financial risk. In traditional life insurance, the companies instead decide how the capital is managed and bear the financial risk.

Of the assets held by occupational pension companies in 2025, 90 per cent belonged to traditional life insurance and the remainder to unit-linked insurance. These proportions have remained largely unchanged over the past ten years. For life insurance companies, however, the share of assets in unit-linked insurance and PPLI has increased sharply. In 2025, almost half (47 per cent) of the assets were linked to unit-linked insurance and just over 22 per cent to PPLI, compared with 39 and 10 per cent respectively in 2016. The share of assets managed within traditional life insurance decreased from just over 51 per cent in 2016 to around 30 per cent in 2025.
