The return on assets held by life insurance and occupational pension companies is significant because it affects the level of future pension payments.
The return on assets invested in traditional insurance by Swedish life insurance and occupational pension companies was 6.2 per cent in 2025. This was slightly below the average annual return of 6.7 per cent over the past twenty years. The relatively strong return in 2025 was mainly due to favourable developments in the Swedish and global stock markets and the comparatively high proportion of company assets invested in equities. However, the return in a single year is of less importance because the savings are long-term. Instead, returns over time determine the level of future pension payments.
